MTNL to provide Wi-Fi access to Parliamentarians by end-December 2015
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has stated that it will complete the project to provide Wi-Fi services to the residences of the Parliamentarians, covering both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Members, by end-December 2015. The capital cost of the project is Rs 400 million which is being fully funded by the Central government. The project includes deployment of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services and Wi-Fi equipment.
MTNL has already connected the residences of the Members of Parliament (MPs) with fibre optic network that provides a maximum internet speed of 10 Mbps.
Further, MTNL has awarded a contract to Ahmedabad-based systems integrator Sanghvi Infotech Private Limited (SIPL). As per the contract, SIPL will supply hardware components such as controllers, access points and authentication systems and will also configure the MP's computing systems. SIPL will also ensure network security to prevent any untoward cyber activity.
Meanwhile, MTNL is also working on a public Wi-Fi project in the Delhi circle that would be based on a revenue-sharing model with private vendors. The operator is expected to issue a purchase order to procure the equipment for the same soon.
